This show was fun – and for now it will be the last for a while. What great songs to go out with! …Every time I hear Amythyst Kiah her songs stick in my head forever – not saying that’s a bad thing, just sayin’… X really did help save my sanity when their album came out in 2020; thanks Exene, John, Billy and DJ… John Doe’s album thoroughly swings for a largely folkish collection, a great achievement… both my daughter and I love the Linda Lindas, such great spirit… I badly want to see Goat live… JVA has been at it for years and deserves all the love you have to share – his stuff really is fabulous…

Excited The Third Mind is working again; stay healthy Dave Alvin! …Shrimp, weiner dogs and Viagra Boys makes for a fun, loud lunch… way to go, Nervous Eaters, old guys rule! … Tracy Bryant is the soundtrack to my dreams, a haunting thing indeed… Aoife (Wee-fee) Nessa Frances has terrific stuff out, look her up asap… Yard Act is just plain fun… Sharon Van Etten puts me in a Twin Peaks zone… Javier Escovedo’s new stuff is SO fab – check him out with the Zeros! …Fontaine’s DC sell mountains of records in the UK – can’t wait till they tour the States with the Arctic Monkeys this spring.

Our year-end “Lost Gems Special” – songs deserving more attention than they got when first released… Brian Tyler’s soundtrack for Bubba Ho-Tep is amazing – touching, emotional, exhilarating, perfect for the film… Frigid Pink’s bombast reminds me of Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly… Saw the Blind Boys of Alabama once as an opening act – so good I forget who the headliner was… NY Dolls, just… yeah…. Richard Thompson continues to amaze, still producing fine new material (yay!)… The awesome Willie DeVille left us MUCH too soon… That Ike & Tina song still blows my mind; Ike was an asshole but had it going on musically…

Love’s Forever Changes NEVER got its due… Seasick Steve spotted in LA is exciting – hopefully some 2023 dates… San Diego’s Low Volts are a bolt out of the blue – what a unique sound… Luscious Jackson’s grooving rap-rock makes them a 90’s band I really miss… I will always LOVE The Blasters; stay strong, Phil Alvin… Moon Goose hits me in my “happy place;” each new release more so and more so… next week’s show will be the last for a while. We’re going on hiatus but we’re ending with a year-end “new songs that fit right in” finale – don’t miss it!

Love the fact that The Cramps are having a resurgence due to Tim Burton and WednesdayKula Shaker’s new album and tour are really exciting, check out their new material… Though not new, the Duke Spirit took me by storm, and what’s up with making music in the desert? …Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are FUUUUNNN to get into, they seep inside my head so easily… Joanna Connor plays like, well, a mother; thanks for turning me on to her, Slash! …I’ve seen Negativland live twice and each time their creative approach to “found sound” blows my mind, highly recommended… Kevin Kinney puts me in the mind of Soul Coughing and Mike Daughty… MORE MORE MORE from The Black Lips — love this one to death! …Blinker the Star = find of the week!

Found some amazing new bands this week – Neverland Ranch Davidians somehow manage to squeeze soul, crunch and… and… a whole bunch of stuff into tidy little three-minute gold nuggets. Their new album coming in January…. The Black Halos are fresh, fun and perfect for VOLUME at your next party… I haven’t heard anything as ethereal as Sharon Van Etten since Twin Peaks – she’s got the slow grooves nailed… Courtney Barnett just plain RAWKS, turn her up too… and TV On The Radio, though not technically “new,” still singed my ears big time; I’ll have more from them in the coming weeks!

FNM were hugely underrated innovators, they need more love! …Queen brought it even on weak live albums – their concert presentation overcame ALL… This Blasters song proves how powerful and creative they remained even after brother Dave left; get well soon, Phil! …Ennio Morricone, just, HOORAY! …Javier Escovedo is awesome and I’m looking forward to what’s next… Managed to get X, the Blasters and the Knitters all in the same show …Angela Perley rocks – check out her older stuff, definitely looking forward to what’s next… Leonard Cohen, again, just HOORAY! …No one was better live than Sam Cooke. Fight me. 🙂 …X saved me again with this early-Covid release. They reminded me there WAS still hope in the world.

What was played on The Hip Therapy Music Hour this week? Yeah, a rant. It happens around the holidays. I’m not “anti-holidays” so much as I’m “anti-consumerism” and I see TV as the biggest bringer of my woe. A friend once said, “If you’re not content today, there’s nothing you can buy this weekend to change that.” Word. Buy more and feel… better? Well, not in any universe I know. We’re being gaslit into believing that this strategy actually works. Nope. Nopity nope. Basic sanity is hard enough this season without the added burden of financial concerns and expectations. Anyway, that’s why the rant. Felt good to get away from the TV and play some loud music! Now, back to our regularly scheduled blog posting….

Fred “Sonic” Smith knew how to rock! …I still know every word to every song of Elvis Costello’s first three albums, probably the kind of fan he most hates… Dry Cleaning has a groovy vibe, check out more of their stuff! … I didn’t get into Ian Dury until a few years ago with his biopic on HBO with Andy Serkis – find it if you can… I did actually see the Horseflies with their electric banjo, live, at a wedding near Ithaca, NY and they were FABULOUS… Gil Scott-Heron, RIP, such great music… Fontaines DC – my discovery of the week! Totally blown away… The Paranoyds are fun, their whole new album sounds great… I LOVE MOON GOOSE, check them out! …Danny Gatton really was a tremendous player; check out more of his stuff. This week’s songs ranged from groovy Stones to Johnny Cash to a spiritual exploration… I’ve always wanted to pair B.A.D. and “G, B & U” as one so vividly references the other AND, turns out, Ennio Morricone’s birthday was two days ago, November 10. Left-over Halloween spookiness? …Garden Centre was a great discovery, as well as Matt Rae.. saw “Cruella” recently with my daughter with Ike and Tina covering Led Zep in the soundtrack and they blew me away! …Kula Shaker’s on tour and I already have tickets… And regarding The Smoke’s “My Friend Jack:” I was at a club early recently when “My Friend Jack” came on. I was mesmerized! Tip of the “Hip Hat” to whoever put together the Dream Syndicate’s walk-in music for turning me on to such a cool and utterly obscure band.

Computers, technology and rock and roll this week, and some great rockers indeed! Happy to discover Gino and the Goons out of St. Pete, FLA; and The Figgs out of Saratoga Springs, NY. Both bring energy and urgency that’s badly needed in music right now… “Rockhouse” is one of my fave Ray Charles songs and Fathead Newman just makes a great thing better… I saw Tracy Bryant open for the Dream Syndicate a while back and this song, with its totally transfixing guitar line, was his opening number… Complete accident: I didn’t mention Aoife Nessa Frances with her song “Chariot,” another totally ethereal piece… Blackbird was AWESOME in the 90s and I’ll have an interview with lead guitarist/lyricist Chip Kinman up within the week… and Kula Shaker just announced an American tour – hooray!!

Played on the Hip Therapy Music Hour this week: a lot of fun stories! Grand Funk roadtrip songs, John Lennon covering Little Richard, Rocky Horror’s author and Riff Raff covering himself, the return of a 50+ year old Boston punk band, and the “untold saga” brought up by Stan Ridgway. Who’da thunk a Swedish rock band with a pretty outrageous name, the Viagra Boys, would sound so cool? Chuck Berry’s final single (RIP, Chuck, and Jerry Lee Lewis, too). Amythyst Kiah rocks with my fave song of the show, John Doe sings creepily about a dead woman, and heading out with an unannounced song, “Making the Freeway” by fIREhOSE, featuring Mike Watt on bass. A TOTALLY fun show – hope it was for you too! Click above to hear it again. Thanks!

I truly love Brian Tyler’s “The King’s Highway” from the Bubba Ho-Tep soundtrack, as well as the Waldos’ “Party Lights” featuring Walter Lure, who played with Johnny Thunders’ Heartbreakers after the New York Dolls broke up. The Dead South’s song has a great video – check it out. The Third Mind features bassist Victor Krummenacher, who is interviewed on this website, and DAVE ALVIN – get well soon, Dave! “Claudia Cardinale” really shows their guitar chops! The Phil Manzanera instrumental I’ve loved since college radio and I’m glad to finally share it. Le Tigre simply ROCKS, and how long has it been since you’ve heard Luscious Jackson? Questions?

Played on The Hip Therapy Music Hour this week: This week features Moon Goose, my favorite Welsh band, who are releasing a new album THIS WEEKEND (visit them on BandCamp.com); music from Los Angeles’ Kinman brothers, Tony and Chip, in their Ford Madox Ford and Rank and File iterations (Dils soon, I promise!); the sensational Linda Lindas; and a good friend from Portland, JVA, with just an astonishing new album of instrumental rock tunes. Played on The Hip Therapy Music Hour this week: I always like opening shows with a song by Seasick Steve. He first hit me when he was on the Jools Holland TV show out of England. His new album is out and I can’t wait to hear it! The Blue Orchids are a fabulously quirky band. Check out my earlier post about them. I didn’t even know surf music was a thing in France until I discovered The Taikonauts. They’ve recently broken up but I still dig their stuff. And finally… finally… playing The Dream Syndicate on the radio again feels SO good! They’re on tour in Europe now. Give them a test drive.
