Vinyl Williams’ Grand Musical Tradition
For descendants of musical aristocracy, expectations can get weird. Lionel Williams, front-man of the band Vinyl Williams, is the grandson of movie music maestro John Williams, as well as the son of session player/Air Supply member Mark Williams. His uncle Joseph Williams is a member of Toto. In this instance, family standards might seem a tad high. Kids and grandkids taking on their own musical careers face a “sink or swim” scenario of truly daunting terms. Musical survival – let alone success – appears heavily and unfavorably tilted. Vinyl Williams’ grand musical tradition, though, more than effectively continues what is an astonishing streak of family talent and creativity.
Williams’ band released its first EP, NAKED SANCTUARY, in 2010. England’s Guardian newspaper declared them “New Band Of The Day” in 2012 upon the release of their first album, LEMNISCATE. The sound of their five studio LPs is alternately groovy, psychedelic, haunting, mellow and yet driving and danceable. If “reverby” isn’t a word yet, Williams’ music makes the case for its necessity. He describes his music as “celestial pop” while others categorize it as “new-psychedlic,” “shoe gaze” and “dream pop.”
With guitarist/vocalist Nick Logie, drummer Eric Werner and guitarist Nathan Najera, Williams in the video above presents the song “Aphelion” from the band’s 2018 album OPAL. The show was stunning, possibly reminiscent of something from the glory days of San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom with rear-screen, psychedelic and constantly moving background projections. This media madness was also courtesy of Mr. Williams, who’s other life includes being a visual artist (demonstrated in the video below) with several gallery showings to his credit, as well as a video director with clients including Tears For Fears.
“A vibe that’s calm, happy, fizzy and fun.”
Courageously and impressively, Mr. Williams brings light and sound together in his own way as well as any family member. ANY family member. Vinyl Williams’ grand musical tradition conjures an original zen-like vibe that’s calm, happy, fizzy and fun. Who doesn’t need a little more of that?
Relax and take a taste. Ahhh… just right!
