Peel Dream Magazine’s Beautiful Rocking Calm
How can a band sound simultaneously stripped-down and lush? Peel Dream Magazine has it figured out. Described (perhaps derogatorily) as “shoegaze music,” this trio rises above the inaccurate chatter and delivers happy but intense pop songs that can lull and kick in alternating strokes. This video, “Pictionary,” is from their upcoming (10/22) album PAD and on the night this video was recorded, Peel Dream Magazine’s beautiful rocking calm was on full display. Its performance left me simply… happy. 🙂
Peel Dream Magazine’s first album, MODERN META PHYSIC, hit the public consciousness in 2018. Named for the legendary BBC radio personality and master musical tastemaker John Peel, a man totally unafraid of any musical genre, PDM’s leader, Joe Stevens, a Brooklynite and current Angeleno, approaches his music in much the same way: all ideas are good ideas unless proven otherwise. Tastes of tropical, funk, rock, post-punk and cabaret permeate his works. He has curated amazing synth sounds from the 70’s and often futzes the familiar into the intriguingly new. And it works.
Though the music tends towards soft-ish, it is still welcoming and fully engaging. Stevens’ words have a separate clarity and distinct sharpness – even bite – all their own. His songs are crafted such that they read just as easily as poetry. Peel Dream Magazine’s beautiful rocking calm becomes even more pervasive as they release their next album, PAD, on October 7th through Tough Love/Slumberland Records.
