Elephant Stone Live Brings New Life
The music of Montreal’s Elephant Stone goes places that most psychedelic bands — and the rest of us, for that matter — can only dream about. More people that grew up listening to rock radio in the 70s/80s/90s need to know about them – this band is perfect for any rock radio station willing to take a risk. Just take a look at this Elephant Stone performance video.
Recorded on the opening night of their 2022 West Coast tour and emphatically spotlighting both the band and the club (The Lodge Room is worthy of it’s own blog post but that’s for later), the videos below consist of, first, the band’s opening number that starts with a beautiful sitar solo flowing into “Heavy Moon” from their self-titled 2012 third release; and the second is a medley from their 2020 release HOLLOW that includes “Land of Dead,” “Darker Time, Darker Space,” and “The Court and Jury.”
Singer/songwriter/bassist/sitarist Rishi Dhir’s mystic explorations swerve from cerebral to mystic and take you to his firmly rooted love for the songs of Nirvana, Cream and “Kashmir”-era Led Zeppelin. On stage, he alternates between bass and sitar – an instrument he plays seated and barefoot on a blanket-covered road case. His songs and sitar playing respectfully reference both Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. Likewise, Robbie McArthur’s guitars — slide and otherwise — perfectly complement the band’s Zen-but-rocking attitude. Jason Kent supports on keyboards and guitar and, occasionally, on bass when Dhir is playing sitar; and Miles Dupree’s drumming gives structure and surprising power to this band’s spacey, rocking audacity. They have a deep catalog of great songs and are a great afternoon’s plunge.
Hard rocking yet… thoughtful? Who’da’thunk?
Altogether, this may be the most fun, rocking and self-reflective band currently working. Immerse yourself in their music. If you grew up listening to rock radio in the 70s/80s/90s, this is a true reward. If you know them, you already love them; if you’re new, you’re in for a treat.
