HIP CHECK: The Jingly Sound of COIN

The grooviest aspect of a long perspective on music is hearing when new acts synthesize disparate genres into unexpectedly cohesive and unique songs. Old-school, new-school, weirdos, nerds and jocks all free-associating in a creative stew. Imagine that. It’s kind of what COIN brings to their music.

Formed in Nashville in 2012, the band COIN has been around the block a few times and have, in today’s featured song, shown that they aren’t afraid to simultaneously take on pop, electronic, rock and rap. I’m normally much more of a rock ‘n’ roll guy but, having heard their Chapstick on repeat for an hour now, I can’t. Make. It. Stop. And that’s a good thing.

Diverse musical influences align like planets in a perfect sky: new music from COIN propels the band to next-level success.

The trio of Chase Lawrence, Ryan Winnen and Joe Memmel released EPs and albums, toured extensively and garnered decent airplay by America’s more adventurous rock stations. Covid shut down their touring, like so many others, in early 2020 but that didn’t stop their music. New music from COIN, Chapstick, featured below, arrived a few months ago and garnered enough airplay to reach #1 on the Adult Album Alternative (AAA) chart. This band is poised for the next level, as demonstrated by this October 7, 2021 performance of Chapstick on Jimmy Kimmel Live:

This hooky little number exhibits influences ranging from Fitz and the Tantrums to Collective Soul to, um, Kraftwerk. Really. New music from COIN. Give it 3:52 of your life. It will make you will smile. Really.
